Windows

VISTA

The plugins are installed correctly, but don't show up in the hosts filter menu

VISTA may have problems letting the host (fx. Photoshop) load plugins if you are not logged on as administrator. This goes for all plugins, not just Power Retouche. If you experience this...

SOLUTION:
Run Photoshop (or other host) logged on as administrator.

OR
If you log on as non-administrator and want to run Photoshop as a non-administrator

Select a plugin
Right click and select Properties.
Tab Security. Continue. Ok for permission to continue.
If "Group or user names" does not have your user name, then add it. Allow at least read and execute.
YOU MUST DO IT FOR EACH AND EVERY PLUGIN.

DEP will have to be turned off for Photoshop if you encounter "Memory Access Violation" errors. See below (XP) for how to do this.

XP

The plugins are installed correctly, but won't run.

This means you have DEP (Data Execution Prevention) turned on for your host.

To turn off DEP in XP

1. Open System by clicking the Start button , clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Maintenance, and then clicking System.

2. Click Advanced System Settings. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

3. Under Performance, click Settings.

To turn off DEP for an individual program
4 .Select the check box next to the program that you want to turn off DEP for, and then click OK.

If the program is not in the list, click Add. Browse to the Program Files folder, find the executable file for the program (it will have an .exe file extension), and then click Open.

Mac

.sit file

If the installer you have downloaded is a ".sit" file

1. unstuff the downloaded .sit file. You need stuffit expander installed for that. It's freeware
http://www.stuffit.com/mac/expander/index.html

2. Doubleclick the expanded file. It's the actual installer. Go through the screens and when asked select the folder Plug-Ins inside the Photoshop folder.

3. Once there, in Photoshop the menu Filters will have a new entry: Power Retouche.

Special for Mac Classic under early OSX on older macs

Classic under OSX

If you want to use the Power Retouche plug-ins with Photoshop 6 running in classic mode on an older mac, you will have to do the following once...

The Power Retouche installer can install both OSX (carbonized) and Classic (non-carbonized) versions of Power Retouche. But the installer installs the version compatible to the Start disk system. That means you will have to start your mac up in classic mode once for installing the Power Retouche plug-ins.

1. Under the apple menu you can select Start up disk. Change it to Classic. Reboot your mac and it should start up as a classic.

2. Install the Power Retouche.

3. Under the apple menu change Start up disk back to OSX and reboot.

Thats it once and for all.

Most Macintosh computers built after 2002 do not support booting into OS9 so recent Macintoshes require PhotoShop 7 or higher and OS X.
